At SAM, we are proud to support causes that make a real difference, and in June, our Joint Managing Director Paul Lavery took part in the Doddie’5 Lions Challenge – Ireland to show support for one of our key partners, MEDITE SMARTPLY, a principal sponsor of the event. The challenge aimed to raise awareness and vital funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and the fight against Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Paul joined an inspiring group of cyclists, including Kenny Logan and MEDITE SMARTPLY Managing Director Chris King, who completed the full route around Ireland. MEDITE SMARTPLY also set a company fundraising target of £20,000, which was quickly exceeded thanks to the generosity of their customers, suppliers, and team members.
Representing SAM, Paul cycled a gruelling 555km route around the island of Ireland, which kicked off from Belfast, in just six days. The ride concluded at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, ahead of the British & Irish Lions vs Argentina match, serving as a powerful moment of unity and achievement in the mission to raise funds and awareness for MND research.
Reflecting on the challenge, Paul said:
“What an experience that was! The hardest thing I have ever done but one of the best, and all for a great cause. Thanks to everyone who has donated, our small team has raised over £600k so far and still counting. Thanks to all my fellow riders mentioned below for bringing the banter, creamy pints, and for pushing me up several hills (Orla Walsh and Paul McKenna)!”
Throughout the challenge, Paul had the privilege of riding alongside an exceptional group of individuals, fellow cyclists, charity champions, and also sporting legends, who brought energy, camaraderie, and relentless determination to the journey. These hero’s were Kenny Logan, Chris King, David Stephen, Jamie Bamber, Bill Farrell, Gordon Wilson, Mark Douglas, Tony French, Stephen Gallagher, Mitch Hutchcraft, Ally McCoist, Hamish Weir, Paul Sefton, Mel Deane, Archie Curzon, Gabby Logan, Duncan Barton, Jamie Lindsay, Kenny Campbell, Nick Riggall, Will Green, Peter Halley, Martin Wilson, Darragh Buckley, Pat Dobbyn, Jimmy Phelan Andrew Johnston, Iain Ward, Doddy Gourlie, Danny Sawrij, Stephen, and Jimmy.
The challenge aimed to raise over £555,555, a goal that was impressively surpassed as the riders approached Dublin. 10% of all funds raised will directly benefit MND services across Ireland, helping to provide essential care and support to those affected.
At SAM, we are proud to stand alongside Chris and the MEDITE SMARTPLY team, and we commend all involved for their determination, teamwork, and commitment to such a meaningful cause.
Thanks to everyone who has sent messages of support, donated generously, or helped raise awareness throughout the challenge. Your encouragement has made a real difference.
